Danny Ball was in action on Saturday night.

The unbeaten Midlands welterweight headed north to Ellesmere Port in Cheshire for a 10 round title fight.

The vacant World Boxing Council International Silver Welterweight Title was up for grabs and the Ellesmere Port Sports Village provided the setting for the contest.

In the opposite corner, and fighting in his home town, was Mason ‘Nutty’ Cartwright.

Nutty was four years older, had only lost once and, with 70 rounds of professional boxing already in the bank compared to Ball’s 40, was bringing more experience into the bout.

For Ball, the quest was clear-cut; to protect his unbeaten record and to return to Dudley as the new Champion.

It was a second attempt to win a title for both boxers.

In March this year, in Birmingham, Ball had challenged the Midlands Area Welterweight Champion, Kaisee Ball.

After ten hard fought rounds the referee, Kevin Parker, scored the contest a draw (95-95) and Benjamin held onto the title.

Cartwright travelled to Leeds in May 2018 to fight Bradford’s Darren Tetley for the vacant WBO European Welterweight Title.

Going into the ninth round of the bout, Cartwright was ahead on the scorecards but was carrying a horrific lip injury. Referee, Phil Edwards, stopped the fight, and Tetley became the new champion.

Saturday night’s contest for the vacant title provided a perfect opportunity for both Ball and Cartwright to add weight to their already impressive boxing credentials.

A win for Ball would make him just the second Midlands boxer to hold the title since it was first introduced by the W.B.C in 2011.

The first Midlander, Birmingham’s Sam Eggington, won the title in 2015, also becoming at that moment, the first man to defeat Lancashire’s Shayne Singleton.

Could Danny Ball find that explosive power that had seen him stop three of his previous opponents or would Mason Cartwright’s experience give him the edge?
